Leeds Book Award Ceremony

Children from year 5 were lucky enough to attend the Leeds Book Award Ceremony 2016 on Monday 23rd May. At the event there were the authors of the 6 shortlisted books.
The winner was:
Gorilla Dawn by Gill Lewis. We were luck to meet Gill and have her book signed for school.

The Good Behaviour Game

Our school has been working with Manchester University on a research project called the Good Behaviour Game. Miss Togher runs the behaviour management technique in her Year 3 Class. The project was pioneered in the US and the Lead Researcher from the American Institute of Research, Gail Chan, came to the UK to see schools where the project is working well. Our school has been used as a  model for others to follow so John Rees (Good Behaviour Coach) and Gail met with Mrs McDonald, Miss Togher and most importantly our fantastic Year 3 class.
Reception class presented Monday Assembly this week. They told us about all about Pentecost and the beginning of the Church. Children read beautifully and some, representing tongues of fire, showed us how the apostles were given the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Each class read out a gift of the Holy Spirit and Mrs Bates asked children from every class to look out for examples of children using those gifts throughout the week. Well done to Reception class for starting our week in such a lovely way!
Congratulations to Sacred Heart Year 3 children, Tyler Armstrong, Aimee Nya and Phoebe Takyi, who made their First Holy Communion at Our Lady of Lourdes on Sunday 14th May 2016. The children made their First Communion alongside other children from our Parish. The Mass was a wonderful celebration and the children enjoyed a communion breakfast afterwards. A huge thank you to Mrs Armstrong for providing the communion breakfast and to Mrs Myers for the teas and coffees.
The Magic Pencil. A short film that was developed and produced by Mr Lund's Film Club. Supported by award winning productions company My Pockets and Into Film. The children operated the camera, animated, recorded sound and acted in the film – some choosing to take a behind the scene role, where as others preferred to be centre stage showcasing their acting ability. On Tuesday 24th May parents have been invited to attend an exclusive screening at Hyde Park Cinema.

Mini Vinnies Assembly - Monday 25th April 2016

Children's University Super Saturday -
Saturday 23rd April

Sacred Heart's participation in The Children's University got off to a dramatic start as four year 5 pupils attended the latest Super Saturday at the West Yorkshire Playhouse with Miss McCarney. Activities included drama fun (as in the picture) and a backstage tour where the children caught a glimse of rehearsals for the next big production at the playhouse.

Leeds Beckett Thank You Assembly - Friday 15th April 2016

Sacred Heart dogs                                                   Frances Shelley on the start line

The Harewood 10K was a great success with all the runners making it safely around the off road course. Special mention must go to Frances Shelley (Year 5) who raced in the 2K run came 12th out of over 200 people raised over £70 for the playground fund in sponsorship, what a great effort!
The staff and supporters have raised over £800 to go towards the upcoming playground development in Key Stage One. We must thank all those who sponsored the team. We must also thank all those staff members who gave up their Sunday morning to race or walk in order to raise money for the children of this school.

Rhodes Trust Grant
In celebration assembly we had a very special visitor. Dr Hagerty presented a cheque for £1000 to the school to improve ICT facilities. The Rhodes Trust provides financial benefits that are not normally provided by the Local Authority for Catholic schools in Leeds. The whole school community are very grateful to this historic charity for the grant and presented Dr Hagerty, who is a Trustee, with a thank you card and gift from the children of Sacred Heart.

Swedish Student Visit
The school was asked by Leeds Beckett University to let some Swedish university students come to our school to talk to teachers and pupils about our school. As ever, Sacred Heart was very welcoming and the students were made to feel part of the school community. They were researching, community football, Modern foreign languages and reading and asked our pupils some interestiong questions about school life.
Niall and Niyah are asked about their reading likes and dislikes

Asthma Mark
Our School community were celebrating at Friday Assembly as Sacred Heart have been awarded the Asthma mark and are the first school in Leeds to achieve the award. This means that our school has developed an environment where the needs of children with asthma are effectively met and ensures that their school experience is not affected negatively by asthma. Assemblies and staff training have ensured that the school community are aware of the needs of all pupils. This project is being rolled out to other schools with Sacred Heart being the leader and model for others to follow.
Newspaper photographers were in school and the children and Elaine (our inculsion manager) have been interviewed by Aire fm and Heart radio.

Check out the mural in the top hall. A painting of Noah's Ark has brightened up the room. A huge thanks to the Human Resources department from Leeds Beckett University who volunteered their time to produce the Art work for the school and to Mr Lund for arranging the project.
