"A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots."
Marcus Garvey
History at Sacred Heart aims to inspire our children's curiosity to know more about the past. We equip our pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. The history curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils know and understand the history of our country as a coherant, chronological narrative from the earliest times to the present day, how people's lives have shaped this nation, and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world. We want all of our children to develop a chronological awareness of our history, which encompasses enriching experiences, inside and outside the classroom.
The long term plan for History enables our pupils to know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world, the nature of ancient civilisations, the expansion and dissolution of empires, and characteristics features of past non-European societies. We are fortunate to be located in the heart of Leeds, which has an extensive, fascinating history. We focus on our local history, allowing learners to understand their own identity and notably link Kirkstall and Leeds's history to national and international events.
