PSHE AND RSE

'Unique and different is the next generation of beautiful'
Taylor Swift

Sacred Heart is a school that supports the whole child. Striving for academic excellence is matched by a relentless drive to support our pupils and families in developing their emotional, social and physical wellbeing. We seek to build the character and morality of our young people, enabling them to believe in their inherent value and contribute to society as they move on from primary education.

Our work in this area has been externally validated by Leeds's Health and Wellbeing service, and we are delighted to be recognised as Health and Wellbeing Service Beacon School.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education
PSHE education is a school subject through which pupils develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain. When taught well, PSHE education helps pupils to achieve their academic potential, and leave school equipped with skills they will need throughout later life. At Sacred Heart our comprehensive PSHE curriculum is underpinned by You, Me, PSE. This scheme of work provides our school with a clear and progressive PSHE curriculum. We have carefully adapted this scheme to suit the needs of our pupils. The PSHE curriculum is divided into seven different strands:
  • Relationship and Sex Education
  • Drug, alcohol and tobacco education
  • Keeping safe and managing risk
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing
  • Physical health and wellbeing
  • Careers, financial capability & economic wellbeing
  • Identity, society and equality

Relationships and Sex Education

RSE is delivered in school using Life to the Full, a fully resourced Scheme of Work for Catholic primary schools which embraces and fulfils the new statutory curriculum. Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the same topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world. The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God - created chosen and loved by God. The programme is fully inclusive of all pupils and their families. We have embedded the Life to the Full content into the PSHE long term overview. You can see the long term plan below.
